The Sit and Stay is one of the most simple and yet most helpful commands you can teach your dog. It gives you a splendidly simple way to manipulate him when you want to most.
It is also one of the most simple commands that you and your dog can quickly attain. The importance of teaching a dog to sit and stay cannot be overemphasized.
Not only will Tommy stop jumping up on Grandmother when she walks into the house, but when the door opens, he will not run into the street. Use the "Sit and Stay" command when you would like your dog to stay noiselessly in one spot.
As an example, Kaiser, a German Shepherd, would become so happy when Jane was going to feed him that he sent the dish flying out of her hands. After teaching him the Sit and Stay, he sat like an ideal man when she put his dish down.
Getting your dog to sit - the straightforward part training the dog to sit on command is reasonably easy.
One. Show your dog a tiny, bite-sized treat, holding it just a bit in front of his eyes, a little over his head.
Two. Say "Sit" as you bring your hand above his eyes. When your dog looks up at the treat, he should sit.
Three. When he sits, give him the treat and let him know what a good puppy he is. Let him know without petting him. If you pet him at the same time as you praise him, he'll likely get up, but what you actually need him to do is sit.
Praising is oral,eg saying "good" or "good dog" in a pleasing tone of voice. Rewarding gives the dog a treat for a correct reply while he is still in position.
As an example, if your dog gets up after you told him to sit, and you then give him a treat, you are rewarding his getting up and not the Sit. When using this technique of training the dog to sit, position your hand correctly re the dog's head.
If your hand is held too high, your dog will jump up; if it is too low, he will not sit. Hold your hand about 2 inches above his head.
Four. If your dog doesn't respond on his very own, say "Sit" again and physically place your dog into a Sit position by placing your left hand under his tail and behind his knees and your right hand on his chest, and then tuck him into a Sit.
Five. Keep your hands still and count to 5, before giving him the treat.
Six. Practice making your dog sit 5 times in a row for 5 days. Some dogs catch on to this idea so fast that they sit in front of their owner whenever they would like a treat.
