German Shepard puppies have only risen in popularity in the later 19th century. This breed of large sized dogs is classified as working dogs, and is part of a group that was originally utilized to herd sheep. As early as their stage as puppies, they already exhibit acute intelligence and strength, much so that they are often given roles in the police and military forces anywhere in the world. They also show a fierce loyal and defensive nature, these characteristic have also been acknowledged by dog owners, making the German Shepard ideal guard and companion dogs. They are currently one of the dog worlds most registered breeds.
German Shepard puppies trace their origins in Germanys Phylax Society, which in the 1890s, aimed to standardize dog breeds. When the society disbanded only after three years its foundation, a former member, ex-cavalry captain Max von Stephanitz founded the Society for the German Shepherd Dog, aiming to bree d working dogs patterned after a superior dog he discovered in a dog show named Horand von Grafrath. Horand and offspring were the first German Shepard dogs, with this breed gaining international recognition after the First World War, when German Shepard dogs were used in missions. Furthering the popularity of the breed were movies that featured German Shepard dogs Strongheart and Rin Tin Tin.
German Shepard puppies are available in a number of colors; common colors are combinations of black and red and black and tan and have double coats. Even as puppies, they are specifically grown and bred as they have been proven to the worlds third most intelligent dog breed. As working dogs, their training in police and military work start at a young age. Alas, they are also known for their keen sense of smell.
