How To Choose A Dog That Can Be Easily Trained

If you are shopping for a new pet dog you want to find a dog that will be a good companion, but you most likely will want one that can be trained easily. When you are working on training a dog whether it's a Barbet or a Toy Bulldog or a Poodle that can be obedience trained quite easily, it will make your job much easier when you are house breaking it and teaching it simple manners. While a dog that is more "difficult" can pose some challenges in training, they can be trained by someone who is experienced in dog handing. But, if you are just getting started with dog training, you will want to find one that is quick to learn. When scouring local dog breeders for this type of dog, there are some things that you will want to look for in personality, breed and age.

Personality

A common thought is that a calmer dog is easier to train. True, it may be somewhat simpler to hold this type of dog's attention, an exuberant, hyper dog can also be easy to train if you have some patience. The key is to take home a dog that will bond with you. When you bond with a dog and that dog is constantly all over you because it loves and respects you, it will simply do anything for you. A dog that loves its owner is very simple to train, whether it is excitable or peaceful, submissive or dominant.

A submissive dog will usually cause fewer challenges in training than a dominant one will. To check if your dog is submissive, stare at him or her in the eyes. If the dog looks away before you do, that will let you know of its submission. With miniature dogs and puppies, hold the dog and turn it over so that its belly is exposed. A submissive dog will just lie that way. A dominant dog will oppose you, trying to turn over.

Breed

Your choice of breeds is huge - Dutch Smoushond and Schnoodle to name a few.

Some breeds are known for their trainability. Labs and Golden Retrievers are popular because they are so easy to train. However, the bully breeds are very intelligent and extremely devoted to their owners. This includes American bulldogs, pit bulls and English bulldogs. Corgis, Australian shepherds, German shepherds and Dobermans are dogs that are usually quite easy to train. Terriers and notorious for being "hard headed," but they can be taught and they can learn new skills quickly, especially if they see that they will benefit such as offering them a treat. Mixed breed dogs can also make exceptional pets that are very easy to train.

Age

The old adage says that you can't teach an old dog a new trick and most dog owners believe that adult dogs can not be trained, but that is simply not true. Quite a large number of adult dogs learn even faster than puppies. Adult dogs usually have a better attention span than puppies and they are more settled. Adult dogs can make great pets and can prove to be very easy to train which is a good case to support rescues.

When you choose a dog, look for one that resonates with you. If you find the dog that you can bond with, it will make all the difference with your training.
