Potty training a german shepherd dog is no easy task. After first adopting Bruno I quickly noticed that he kept peeing all over the place, but mostly in one particular location inside my living room. I decided that I was not going to have any of it. So one day after my puppy just finished leaking on my hardwood floor I took him out, pointed to the grass, and yelled Pee here!. Its quite silly to think back now after I learned that this method absolutely doesnt work. But what methods do work to help housebreak your puppy? I have found one simple method that helped me potty train my puppy and I have never had any problems since. My puppy now lets me know that he wants to go pee pee by ringing a little bell next to the door. This makes everything much simpler for me. Every time I see Bruno waiting patiently at the door to be taken out I get a tear in my eye because it brings me such joy to have trained him all by myself. So heres how the training went with me and Bruno. I placed my German shepherd puppy in a crate. I learned that puppies wont excrete as easily around their living area so I placed a few newspapers around the crate and placed a couple of blankets inside the crate. I also placed his food bowl and toys in it. I left him there about 30 minutes at a time, then let him out. After some time he got used to the crate and stopped going to the bathroom all over my floor. I took him outside every time he gave me barking signals and I would praise and reward him after he successfully finished where he was supposed to go. I placed a little bell next to my door and taught my pup to ring it whenever he needs to go.This whole process took about 2-3 weeks. I noticed my German shepherd learned pretty quickly and I later found out that bigger dogs learn faster than smaller ones. I took one step further and taught my puppy how to pee on command. The key to house breaking your puppy is consistency and repetition. Its also very important that you do it the right way, or else you could be wasting your time doing something that doesnt work (or isnt completely correct). All in all you need to remember to praise your puppy enthusiastically because your puppy can associate the deed with your response. However, they can only make that association if it happened only a few seconds after. So if you praise/punish your puppy more than 5 seconds after he/she completed a certain action they will not be able to associate it with anything.Housebreaking your puppy should be the very first thing that you do when you adopt a German shepherd.
