Our Dogs the Chameleons - Family - Pets

The one thing people will rarely say is that their dogs are boring. These precious little friends provide a constant source of entertainment, some challenges and in return they just nee some food, love and security. What a simple relationship right? However you may have seen your dog alter its personality or appearance and take on a different personality from time to time. This can really give you a good laugh.

The big dog sits and watches the cat or a small dog hop up in your lap. They are receiving attention and seem to be in a happy safe place. So, the big dog then forgets its size and hops up in your lap. I have had this happen with a German shepherd. From time to time he would try and maneuver into spots that were far too small for him as well. This misjudging his size had a few things toppled over in the room and me trying top push him off my lap without hurting his feelings. At the other end of the scale I had a small breed dog that believed she could take on any dog on the street. She became rather protective of her territory and the Mastiff and Great Dane on the street were two that she wanted a piece of! Thank goodness these good natured giant family pets found her pulling at the leash and muttering her aggressive little barks and growls as entertaining as we did.

Along with the size issue, there is the tendency for the dog to want the same liberties and attention that the cat receives too. Again this may manifest in your 'too-big' dog trying to curl up in your lap, rub up against your legs, climb onto the back of the couch, but when they realize they are too big you won't have that same gentle landing you would with the cat.

When you give them their food they will slap it around and make noises like a pig and a trough, some chew holes in things like you'd see with termites, and then there are some that mimic us. They will sit on the couch, watching the television and hoping for snacks to show up. At times you'd have to wonder where they learned how to act and role play but it appears is just monkey see, monkey do to get what they are hoping for.

Your dog will sleep like a bear in hibernation in the winter. One thing consistent with most all dogs is their desire to feel protected in the 'den'. Whether they burrow under the covers, hide under a table (most often when they hear thunder or fireworks) or go to their crates or dog houses when they are looking for their own 'time out' this is where they find comfort. Our dogs give us so much, and in return we simply need to make sure they have a safe place, some food to nourish and don't forget to give them lots of love. They are tying themselves in knots trying to get your attention with their drama.Doowaggle
